Yes! 100 SDN Cast Subscribers

SDNCast 100 Subs

After fifteen months of hard work, creating a weekly live webcast called SDN Cast Marcel Meijer (@marcelmeijer), Fanie Reynders (@faniereynders) and I (@aafvstam) we reached the milestone of 100 subscribers of our YouTube channel. That may sound as a low number and sure, compared to some popular YouTube celebs this is, but our webcast is a bit of a niche product.

First, our webcast in general is Dutch except if we have guests in the show not speaking Dutch. In that case we obviously switch to English. Most webcasts are however in Dutch.

Second, the subject of Software Development is not the most popular subject on the interwebs for ‘normal’ human beings outside our little group of developers. And because we target the even smaller group of -Dutch- developers the number of potential subscribers is even lower.

Third, the number of Developers watching YouTube webcasts (especially live) is even lower.

We discuss news and events of the week and try to push in some demos or guests. Sometimes we do specials on location, we always try to be live on Thursdays 8 PM UTC+1.

So why are we doing this?

Well, first of all … it is fun to do!

Second, it keeps you focused. We are forced to monitor what is going on in the market and keep ourselves up to date. Everyone knows the feeling that you have to catch a deadline to do something, and just because the deadline is there you are forced to get your behind out of your lazy chair and get something done (in this case, we need to get into the chair to do some real computer stuff).

Third, we try to get in touch with authors, presenters or other potential guests to show us what they have an can do to writer articles, do presentations at our events or simply share thoughts in our webcasts.

Anyway, I’d like to thank all 100 subscribers to our YouTube Channel for your trust and let’s work on the next 100 subscribers! If you want to share your comments please do so, let us know what we can do better or if you want to join us in our show as a guest: Ping us, leave a Tweet or Google us, I’m sure you can find us.

SDN Cast 62 – Release flavors

clip_image002

In our Dutch SDN Cast 62 we discuss several releases of frameworks and tools. But things tend to get confusing these days. We see RTM, Release to Manufacturer or is it Release to Market. Candidates for Release with RCs – Release Candidates, Early Access, (General) Availability, Beta or Final. And then there are the Insider Programs with their release flight rings. The Xbox release flights are called Preview Alpha, Preview Beta, Preview Delta and Preview Omega …

Does it get weirder than this? We’ll see … at least there is something released.

SDN Cast 61 with guests Sjoukje Zaal and Alexander Meijers

clip_image002

This week we had guests Sjoukje Zaal and Alexander Meijers at our weekly Dutch SDN Cast episode 61. Sjoukje and Alexander are active in their User Groups SPCNL and MixUG so we discussed the topics in relation to this.

With SPCNL their website will provide an updated view on all things related to SharePoint, Office365, Office and Azure and with MixUG they have a User Group where they organize meetups themed around Mixed Reality and everything related to that.

We discuss subjects like AI, Machine Learning, Cognitive Services, HoloLens, Unity, Vuforia and more. What are the differences between Augmented Reality, Mixed Reality and Virtual Reality? We are diving deep into the subject matter ..

SDN Cast 60 – Dotnet demos and more

clip_image002

The week where it was announced that the next version of the current HoloLens will be provided with an embedded AI processor. This important message was explained by Harry Shum, Executive Vice President Artificial Intelligence and Research Group Microsoft, on the CVPR 2017 Computer Vision conference. The already extremely powerful mobile augmented reality computer will become even more powerful and can provide even more realistic Augmented Reality solutions added with extra information about the objects the device will ‘see’ around itself.

Besides the other news (links below) Fanie did another couple (three) demos around the dotnet CLI with dotnet Core and a quick view at the new Azure Container Services. The show is in Dutch, so if you are able to handle that, dive in and see what is going on!

Starting this week all regions in the Netherlands entered their school holiday season and everyone is dropping their work to leave the jobs to move into the sun.

Even so there still is a lot of news to discuss this week, especially a lot of software releases. I put them all below in the list, but just to name a few: The 3d tools called Babylon.JS 3.0 to create some amazing 3D apps, Postman, Cake and not to be forgotten the first release candidate of SQL Server 2017.

This and our other topics in our Dutch SDN Cast number 59 …

SDN Cast 58 – Inspire, API’s en Web Assembly

SDNCast 58-800

Last week it was the week of the Microsoft Partner Conference called Inspire, the conference where Microsoft invites all partners to come over to the special partner conference to get into the new fiscal year and to realign the partner plans for the upcoming year. It appears there is a slight change in policy where the Microsoft wants to include the partners more in their sales flow for selling their cloud products like Azure and Office 365. In previous years much of the sales was often done directly through Microsoft. The new strategy is to include the partners more in this process sharing the revenue processed by these sales initiatives. An important change is thinking in scenarios of specific industries.

Microsoft was always very much integrated at the level of the technology specialists, but when it came to selling the product at the board level there was an issue. The new strategy is to explain more how Microsoft fits in the process of the business itself. How can they extend their services in a way where the business improves by providing better quality and better services to their customers together with Microsoft.

New was the announcement to bring Microsoft 365 to the market for business and enterprise subscribers. An extension to the Office 365 program where Windows is now included next to several other services like security services. In our Dutch webcast we dive into this, this week.

This week we also bring the annual list of free e-books published by one of the Microsoft guys who made a hobby of collecting all the available free e-books and this is a huge list by now! Look at the links from the show-notes below for the URL to get the e-books. The link also contains a couple of links for instance to download the full list to your local machine. Not that this is advised, it really is a huge amount of data to pull in, but if you really want you can do it.

Also two AI APIs became available, one for General Availability (the Bing Entity Search API) and one in preview (Project Prague). The links are like all others in the list below. We discussed the APIs in depth, but in Dutch … sorry for that .

Fanie prepared another demo for us, and this week he is showing the Web Assembly and what you can do with it. If you want to explore by yourself here are some links:

As you see, options enough to address your audience with top notch information. You can even, if you like, be our guest in our SDN Cast shows to discuss the projects you are working on or other topics you master. We will instruct you how to connect with us and what it is you need to join the show.

SDN Cast 57, Layoffs – Timeline – Window App Studio vs Windows Template Studio

clip_image002

Traditionally this week, the week of July 4th, is a quiet week. Many Americans have a small break to celebrate their national holiday. Not so quiet this week due to another tradition where Microsoft releases a press release for the start of the new fiscal year to announce all sorts of restructuring measures.

This time no press release, but the news was leaked from an internal memo. And not one without effects, the memo mentioned the release of thousands of sales (mostly international) people. This may sound as a high number, but on a total of 120,000 it is not that high – still very painful for the ones who concerns it and will be hit by the memo.

Another item emerged from the Interwebs last week. The rumor was spreading that Windows Timeline (“Pick up where you left off”) and the Cloud Clipboard (copy somewhere, paste everywhere) among other features were delayed and will not be released in the upcoming “Fall Creators Update” for Windows 10.

All of these features were announced by Microsoft at the biggest developer conference early this year allowing everyone to think that these features would be released at Redstone 3, aka “Fall Creators Update”.

Joe Belfiore, @joebelfiore, confirmed in a tweet that these features are delayed until somewhere next year.

On the area of developer news, it appeared that Windows App Studio is being sunset, in other words about to be canceled. As alternative, the at Build 2017 announced Windows Template Studio will be provided.

These and other news items (see below) we discussed in our Dutch SDN cast this week. As you may already know by now after over a year of weekly SDN Casts we discuss the latest news and events in the show.

SDN Cast 53 – ARM, CShell, WWDC and news week 23

SDNCast 53-800

Developments are going fast, according to the rumors from the market that is. There already was the pre-recorded video at Build 2017 about Windows on ARM, this weeks announcement by Qualcomm on full Windows 10 PCs running on its Snapdragon 835 ARM processor with built-in LTE for “Always Connected” devices (https://www.qualcomm.com/news/onq/2017/05/31/windows-10-running-snapdragon-835-mobile-pc-platform-unveiled-computex).

Intel quickly followed with a statement suggesting that certain 3rd parties might have been using their patents without their consent.

At the same time videos appeared online showing the new Windows interface called CShell. CShell has options to scale the user interface depending on the device the applications are running on. A smaller device will adapt to a mobile like interface where on full scale systems all details will emerge. All devices will get their most optimized view.

Overall it seems that a new Windows mobile devices is rising but not with Windows Mobile but with the full version of Windows that will also be running on full PC ARM devices as mentioned above. Devices have been announced, in the official prerecorded video by Microsoft and also in other videos to be arriving Q4 this year already! In other words, ready for Holiday Season 2017…

Besides speculating on this, we also discussed the news items presented at the Apple Developer Conference WWDC 2017. We are talking about the new devices, upgrades to the iMac Pro, HomePod, AIKit APIs and more. So our Dutch speaking viewers get updated in about an hour on the latest news and event updates.

If you are in the neighborhood also don’t forget that our next SDN Event is close. At June 23rd we will have our second SDN Event this year with, as always, a great set of sessions and speakers. A slightly changed program this time, we will start with a generic keynote by Richard Campbell. After that the regular sessions start.

SDN Cast 52, live from Madrid, news for week 22

In this week’s SDN Cast (week 22) we connected live to Madrid – Spain, where I attended the MVP Community Event. Between sessions and eating at a restaurant in the Real Madrid Stadium I quickly escaped the group for a moment to give you our weekly report and to sit with Marcel Meijer and Fanie Reynders to present you with the latest news and upcoming events. A show with a sunny Spanish touch.

One of the interesting events for this week is the Computex 2017 event where Microsoft not only announced new products but also presented their vision on “Always Connected Devices”.

The “Always Connected” topic wasn’t their first time, Bill Gates mentioned that years earlier, but this time in a way where devices have integrated their SIMs, so called eSIMs. These are provider independent chips/SIMs installed in your machine and enables you to connect to one or more supported mobile providers. There won’t be a vendor lock with this and allows you to switch providers as you like.

With this you will turn all your devices into phone. This means that your small tablet form factor can act like a phone, but also with larger devices you can turn your device in a phone (note: not like Skype is doing using the internet, but using the 4G/LTE services from your mobile provider).

It’s an interesting development and we might see in this what Microsoft has in mind for mobile phones. Up to now we were kept into the dark on any plans or roadmap for Windows Mobile.

Week 12 – SDN Cast News, Mob Programming with Woody Zuill and Mark Pearl

SDNCast 45

The subject of SDN Cast 45 is, next to the weekly news and event items, Mob Programming. We invited guest Woody Zuill and Mark Pearl to tell us some more on the subject. Both Woody and Mark are highly experienced subject matter experts and are happy to tell us all about it.

If you haven’t heard of it you may question: “What the … is Mob Programming?”. Well, with Mob Programming you are developing with a group of people instead of on your own. Sort of … pair-programming on steroids so to say.

You have one main computer and a team of developers working together on a solution. One of the developers acts like the “driver”, sitting at the keyboard programming the application following directions from the “navigators”.

At certain times, let’s say every 15 minutes, the “driver” changes position and one of the “navigators” will take over this role. The switching “driver” is added back to the group of “navigators” and by doing so if all goes well an application will emerge where all team members agree on.
