Week 4 SDN Cast News with Pieter Fouché on ARM

SDNCast 37

The guest of our first SDN Cast has returned for SDN Cast 37. Well, not quite the first, we did a couple of dry runs to try things out before going live with or first live casts. But lets keep it at that this was the first public cast. Our guest on the first SDN Cast as well as this one is Pieter Fouché.

Today his subject are not the pooping cats using the restroom for humans but is showing how to use automation with the Azure Resource Manager. So, something completely different and more suitable to use on a wider scope (although you can imagine there could be a potential market to use your own toilet to service the cats instead of having to clean out the litter box on a regular interval). Pieter shows us what you can do with ARM (Azure Resource Manager) and how you can take repetitive work away by coding.

Pieter, a developer from origin coming from South Africa is English speaking but we can address him in Dutch as he has no problem understanding the Dutch language at all. Very useful for us (ok not for the English viewers – sorry …), asking the questions in Dutch and getting the answers in English.

Maybe there is something in this video you can use in your work or just watch this SDN Cast to develop yourself. Yeah, international readers probably don’t get it as most of it is in Dutch, but at least you have the news item links, I’m shure there is always something of use below.

Week 3 SDN Cast news with Brady Gaster from Microsoft

SDNCast 36

SDN Cast 36 is, to break a pattern, completely hosted in English. Not for no reason, but because we asked Brady Gaster to join us this week on our web cast. And, as we learned from our parents excluding someone from the discussion is ill-mannered by talking in a different language without translation we did not want to do the show half Dutch, half English and went for the English all the way option.

Already said it, we had a special guest this week, Brady Gaster in a live connection with Microsoft Campus in Redmond. Brady is working on some great tooling such as Downr, Azure Tools for Visual Studio Code, also DMC – docs.Microsoft.com is part of he daily playground, so we asked him to tell us all about it and even better to join us at one of our upcoming SDN Events.

Obviously we started with some news and events but the interesting part of this show is the part where Brady explained in a waterfall of information what they built (and deployed). We collected all the links from his presentation and added them to the list of links below.

Take some time to look at his presentation and see where you can use it in your daily job to be more productive, and think of it as a teaser or introduction of what you will see at our upcoming SDN Events later on this year!

Week 2 SDN Cast News Items – .NET Standard 2.0

sdncast-35

Our second Dutch show this year, traditionally filled with bloopers – maybe we will create a gag-reel – this time we discussed .NET Standard some more. The huge expansion of the number of APIs supported by implementing the ‘compat shim’ or Type Forwarding. This allows you to reference the ‘old’ .NET Framework assemblies to make the .NET scope bigger than ever. The information was found directly from the .NET Standard GitHub repo documentation so you can access it yourself and read it in a dull moment!

And oh, while we were discussing the .NET Standard 2.0 Fanie transformed the FAQ right there on the spot into a BOT. We discussed the technology last week (week 1 of 2017). You now can ask your questions on the bot about .NET Standard 2.0 and your .NET Standard FAQ Bot will provide you with the right answers (provided that your question is clear enough to understand …)

Try the bot here:

Another year, another MVP Award

WP_20170114_14_15_59_Pro

The first of January I was (again) awarded  MVP, for the 12th year already. After a bit of a roundtrip I returned back on my ‘home base’ with the award category of “Office Development”. Initially I was awarded MVP “Visual Studio Tools for the Office System” (I know, what is in a name?) in 2006 and was able to hold on to that for nine years. VSTO however went on maintenance mode and the category was merged into the .NET and Office365 expertises. I work with both, a lot, but was sitting somewhat closer to the Office Team and was moved into the Office365 award category the year after.

Due to complete reorganizations within the MVP Program Group the year after moving to Office365 the category moved again! This time the category was part of an even larger group, Office Servers and Services. VSTO was really a small group of about twenty MVPs, maybe less, Office 365 was huge and Office Servers and Services was bigger than huge. Office development was somehow lost in transition and Microsoft also realized there was a gap in that area and introduced the new Office Development award category and I was happy to find out that I returned ‘home’ by receiving MVP award number twelve in the Office Development category.

WP_20170115_00_23_54_Pro

Even after so many years of Office Development, there are still exciting things going on with the Office developer platform. Office JS is getting more and more mature over time and the team is really working hard to get the interfaces in par with what was there on the Windows platform in order to be able to run all equally on all platforms such as iOS, Android but obviously also on Windows.

Let’s see what 2017 brings on Office Development, Stay tuned and thanks all for giving me the 12th MVP Award!
