SharePoint Framework Extensions Developer Preview now available

SharePoint Framework Extensions Preview

Today the Office Team announced the availability of the SharePoint Framework Extensions Developer Preview. With this you can build site, list and command extensions.

To start building your own Extension Preview projects you can go and start looking at the Preview documentation. If you don’t already have an Office 365 Developer Tenant you can get one if you go to the Office Developer Program so there is no argument not to start using that.

The preview is obviously meant to serve as a way to collect feedback from the community and while the preview is running you can expect new SharePoint Framework Extension capabilities and changes based on your feedback.

If you want to provide your feedback you can do this by adding issues to the GitHub issues list but on the SharePoint tech community, the SharePoint Developer section on the Microsoft Tech Community site.

To give you an impression of what the SharePoint Framework Extensions Developer Preview brings, here are three:

1. Build your own Custom Banner using the ApplicationCustomizer.

Adding a Custom Banner is now one of your options to build your own banner with exactly the information you want to share on your list page.

1. Custom Banner SP

2. Create your own Custom Field Rendering using the FieldCustomizer.

In this example you see that the fields of the list are blurred to hide sensitive list information.

2. Custom Field Rendering SP

3. Adding Command Extensions with CommandSet

With this option you can add your own custom menu actions to be able to trigger your own custom actions.

3. Custom Extensions

If you are looking for more examples (extensions examples will be added soon) for what you can do with SharePoint there is a special SharePoint Showcase site for you to look at and to enjoy all the great options and examples.

Now go ahead, and build your own Extensions using the SharePoint Framework Extensions Developer Preview!

SDN Cast 52, live from Madrid, news for week 22

In this week’s SDN Cast (week 22) we connected live to Madrid – Spain, where I attended the MVP Community Event. Between sessions and eating at a restaurant in the Real Madrid Stadium I quickly escaped the group for a moment to give you our weekly report and to sit with Marcel Meijer and Fanie Reynders to present you with the latest news and upcoming events. A show with a sunny Spanish touch.

One of the interesting events for this week is the Computex 2017 event where Microsoft not only announced new products but also presented their vision on “Always Connected Devices”.

The “Always Connected” topic wasn’t their first time, Bill Gates mentioned that years earlier, but this time in a way where devices have integrated their SIMs, so called eSIMs. These are provider independent chips/SIMs installed in your machine and enables you to connect to one or more supported mobile providers. There won’t be a vendor lock with this and allows you to switch providers as you like.

With this you will turn all your devices into phone. This means that your small tablet form factor can act like a phone, but also with larger devices you can turn your device in a phone (note: not like Skype is doing using the internet, but using the 4G/LTE services from your mobile provider).

It’s an interesting development and we might see in this what Microsoft has in mind for mobile phones. Up to now we were kept into the dark on any plans or roadmap for Windows Mobile.

Call for speakers/writers

As usual we are always looking for presenters for our own events and Meetup’s so if you want to share something about hot technologies or just about something you implemented at work or in an App that could be interesting to our audience let us know so we can schedule you for one or our next SDN events or Dutch .NET Group Meetups.

This off course also goes for if you want to write a great article for us to publish in our SDN Magazines or at our SDN Website. The downside of publishing a magazine article is that there can be some time between writing the article and publishing the magazine. So, if it is time critical sometimes the best option is to publish it on the www.sdn.nl website to get more speedy attention to the article.

As you see, options enough to address your audience with top notch information. You can even, if you like, be our guest in our SDN Cast shows to discuss the projects you are working on or other topics you master. We will instruct you how to connect with us and what it is you need to join the show.

Subscribe

Hopefully we will see you at our weekly web cast, for the schedule go to www.sdncast.nl for next week’s announcement to find out the day and time of our next broadcast or go to www.sdncast.nl/youtube to watch old episodes and videos that we recorded at our events. Don’t forget to subscribe our YouTube channel www.sdncast.nl/subscribe or go directly to YouTube not to miss any of our shows!

Week 12 – SDN Cast News, Mob Programming with Woody Zuill and Mark Pearl

SDNCast 45

The subject of SDN Cast 45 is, next to the weekly news and event items, Mob Programming. We invited guest Woody Zuill and Mark Pearl to tell us some more on the subject. Both Woody and Mark are highly experienced subject matter experts and are happy to tell us all about it.

If you haven’t heard of it you may question: “What the … is Mob Programming?”. Well, with Mob Programming you are developing with a group of people instead of on your own. Sort of … pair-programming on steroids so to say.

You have one main computer and a team of developers working together on a solution. One of the developers acts like the “driver”, sitting at the keyboard programming the application following directions from the “navigators”.

At certain times, let’s say every 15 minutes, the “driver” changes position and one of the “navigators” will take over this role. The switching “driver” is added back to the group of “navigators” and by doing so if all goes well an application will emerge where all team members agree on.

How to record your user group presentations in high quality with low budget tooling

Every three months we at SDN manage to pull off SDN Events, full day four track, five sessions a track with great Dutch and some occasional international speakers showing off their great content to our attendees.

Last year we started to record some of these sessions, first ones to try out as proof of concept, but now in production already to share our content to a bigger audience.

I was asked more than once how we were able to record our SDN Event session recordings in relatively high quality with only some low budget tools. So here it is so far.

Recording gear setup:

SDN Event Recording - 2 Hangout Connections

This has been our setup up as we used it until today, but for the next event we will try something else for the reasons you will read at the end of this blog post. I guess we will continue to tinker with the setup until it is just perfect. This change will be the subject of another blog post, but only if all of this tinkering actually appeared to work for us. No need to bore you with something that does not work properly.

Right now we use two Google Hangout logins per recording, one from the ‘recording device’ (actually the device is not recording, Google Hangouts/YouTube is doing the recording for us) and one login from the laptop used by the presenter.

The ‘recording device’ is logged into Google Hangouts with the recorded projector screen and presenter and presenter voice using the Logitech webcam and wifi microphone set. The presenter logs into Google hangouts with his own laptop, sharing the desktop, providing a high quality representation of what is shown on the projector screen.

My gear list as used up to today with the configuration in the picture:

    • One recording laptop and a Google ID
    • Behringer XENIX QX1002USB
    • AKG WMS45 Band D Wireless Microphone Set
    • Logitech 930e HD Web Cam
    • One presenter laptop to share his desktop

Installing the recording gear:

Put the camera in front of the presenter covering both the projector screen and the presenters desk. Be careful not to put the camera too much into the viewing field of the audience.

The camera is fairly small, so not really an issue as it seems. This camera will be the ‘overview’ camera setup showing both the presenter walking around, sitting down at his desk and the big screen.

The wireless microphone is pinned on the presenter for near field voice recording, don’t hurt him by clipping it on his skin. This microphone will record his story telling voice, picked up with the AKG WMS45 wireless receiver set and dropped into the Behringer XENIX QX1002USB. The Behringer will provide the sound USB input channel for Google Hangout ‘source one’ combined with the camera ‘overview’ output by the Logitech 930.

The presenter is also logged in to Google Hangouts as ‘second source’. This will be full time sharing his desktop.

The main recording device will be logged in as video producer and you will be able to switch between sources, big screen and presenter or desktop view.

An example of a session recording (this recording is in English b.t.w.) :
”Mr. Moffat – Introducing Microsoft Power BI”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_bQ_EivYb4

A full playlist of all our (Dutch and English ) recorded sessions so far can be found here if you want to see more:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLC5P51a_60YElMJvidAy7GagDJH0Y-UwX

What you see in this example is that we are able to switch between the big picture on the overhead screen and jump into detail by showing the desktop from the presenter laptop to get a good readable picture of the slides or even when there is live coding going on.

So is all good, doing it this way?

No, we are still learning and we found some downsides with this configuration (maybe more, but this is the main one) and that is that you require the presenter to log into Google Hangouts and therefor he needs a Google ID. This means that this is not a zero configuration solution to the speaker invited to do his session.

It seemed not everyone owns a Google ID. Also, it can be somewhat cumbersome to the presenter to log into Google Hangouts, disable his camera and recording microphone (check this ahead of time before the recording starts, as this will cause a critical echo caused by getting two sources at once, one over the wireless mic the other through the presenter laptop mic. So the last one has to be disabled. Also there is a small amount of his resources used to run the Hangout in the background. This could affect the responsiveness a little bit and maybe interfere a bit on high resource claiming presentations (for instance if he needs to compile a bit of code in the demos).

With the setup above you are able to live broadcast your sessions and immediately record it as is to share after the event. If you are afraid to broadcast live risking a lower number of attendees (why going to the event, it is broadcasted live) you can record the session private or unlisted and expose the video only when the event is over (this also gives you the option to record the session, download the video and edit the footage adding annotations, start or end screens and upload the edited footage to share as public video).

To get around the issues mentioned above we will test a slightly changed configuration by adding en extra device. But as said, I will explain this later on, when tested and with proof of recording properly.

I really hope this post will encourage you to try the same thing what we did and get more of the community efforts recorded and to get more of our valuable arranged sessions shared to a bigger audience. The information is way too valuable not to share!

If you want to comment on this setup, share improvements, have questions or just want to say something, leave your comments below on this post!

Week 9 – SDN Cast News, looking for the answer with André Obelink

SDNCast 42

With the twentieth anniversary of Visual Studio and the forty-second broadcast of our Dutch SDN Cast we speak with André Obelink on the subject of VB (Visual Basic) and the future of it. Forty-two is also the answer to life, the universe and all according to the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Enough reasons to check out the recording on YouTube for this week.

André Obelink is Microsoft MVP and author of six books, five covering Visual Basic and the sixth written with co-author Sander Gerz on C#.

You can find André Obelink at several places such as
Twitter: @obelink
Website: http://www.obelink.com/

A returning question by many developers is will Visual Basic be around in the near future and if so where will it be positioned by Microsoft. A valid question, as it often appears that also with Microsoft Visual Basic seems to be the ‘forgotten’ language. APIs, sample code and documentation is released for C# at first and following a bit later the VB submission (sometimes we are still waiting for VB equivalents to arrive). We discuss all of this in depth, so if you are Dutch speaking look at this week’s Dutch SDN Cast.

Next to Visual Basic several other subjects get by, from the light-hearted topics such as Xbox Gaming to the very extensive exercise to write books and again – is there a future in book writing.

All in all enough topics making it well worth to jump to YouTube and watch the recording of the 42nd Dutch SDN Cast if you haven’t already watched it live last week.

Week 8 SDN Cast News and Code Orange

SDNCast 41

There is a storm flying over our country, The Netherlands, while broadcasting, Wind force 10 and Code Orange issued by the Dutch weather institute. We will focus on real code however and leave the wind for what it is and where it blows.

Not one, but two guests in this 41st edition of the SDN Cast. Two guests from the country on the south side of the Netherlands, living in Belgium. And they are very versatile, Maarten Balliauw and Xavier Decoster.

Maarten and Xavier are founders of MyGet providing private and public Nuget feeds, NPM, Bower, Maven and Vsix repositories with your own packages or from other sources such as Nuget.org Npmjs.com or Maven Central. This is not all, the supported collections are still expanding so go to www.myget.org to see what is currently supported.

Maarten Balliauw is also Developer Advocate for JetBrains and from there Rider is originated, the multi-platform IDE under development by JetBrains.

We discuss the annually returning event Techorama. The Techorama conference is now one of the biggest events for developers in Belgium and outside Belgium. On the first day there are deep dive workshops planned and the following days from that two sessions-packed days with the best sessions available.

You can still register for the event here.

Week 7 SDN Cast News and Party Time!

SDNCast 40

It’s party time! There was even more than one party, a lot to celebrate this week! Obviously, starting with our own fortieth SDN Cast and that’s a number worth mentioning.

But there is more. In 1997, twenty years ago now, Visual Studio was released and this week there was announced that the upcoming version “Visual Studio 2017” will be released starting March 7th in an online event by Microsoft and local events will be organized at various locations around the world between March 7 and April 30th. Look for it in the links below to see if there are any events in your area to go to. We will obviously spend some attention as well on our next SDN Event – March 17, with some sessions in this area.

And we’re not there yet, five years after the first release of Visual Studio Microsoft changed direction by releasing Visual Studio .NET and as the name reveals, birth of .NET. The new way of programming with the new .NET framework. Until that time everyone was working with MFC -Microsoft Foundation Classes- libraries or other technologies. There was a big change in the way we were going to develop and brought many new features, think of the Roslyn language services. This allowed all sorts of new benefits where we haven’t seen the end of it.

A lot of attention for the past, but there is a lot of interesting new stuff to come in the near future. We are looking forward to the release of Visual Studio 2017.

Week 6 SDN Cast News on Windows Developer Day and more

SDNCast 39

This week was the week of the Windows Developer Day – Creators Update, an online event by Microsoft where they shared that he upcoming version of Windows also called the Creators Update is now feature complete. So also the SDK for this Windows version became available for download. And that was not all, there was more. Open sourcing of about twenty UWP controls developed by Telerik are now available for free.

Project Rome, to control applications on other devices, will now get an Android version soon. Bugs and Features are now in the open and published through a special site providing you with some insights on what is about to come, but also how bugs are progressing. Top UserVoice items will also arrive in the list so you can check for yourself to see how this is evolving.

We looked at migrating .json projects to .csproj. Fanie created a Proof of Concept to transform a .json configuration file into a .csproj equivalent and shows us how to get started in a demo.

Also we added some more interviews (Dutch) that we recorded at the by our friends from dotNed organized dotNedSaturday and also created a dedicated playlist for the dotNedSaturday videos. We are not completely finished yet with editing the interviews so there will be some more the upcoming week. The ones we posted so far can be watched here:

Week 5 SDN Cast News with Colin Dembovsky on ALM

SDNCast 38

Another English spoken SDN Cast, this time Colin Dembovsky is our guest and we speak about ALM, Application Lifecycle Management. Colin helps others companies with his firm to get their heads around things like Continuous Integration (CI) and Continuous Delivery (CD) where a full development line is automated from start to finish. This asks for a mind shift and powerful adjustments within most companies. We discuss the impact and responses from these companies and how they handle things like that.

It can’t be a coincidence that Colin -like Fanie- also has an South African background. Right now Colin is based and working as Senior ALM Developer for Northwest Cadence in Seattle and was awarded with the Microsoft MVP Award for his expertise on ALM.

Week 4 SDN Cast News with Pieter Fouché on ARM

SDNCast 37

The guest of our first SDN Cast has returned for SDN Cast 37. Well, not quite the first, we did a couple of dry runs to try things out before going live with or first live casts. But lets keep it at that this was the first public cast. Our guest on the first SDN Cast as well as this one is Pieter Fouché.

Today his subject are not the pooping cats using the restroom for humans but is showing how to use automation with the Azure Resource Manager. So, something completely different and more suitable to use on a wider scope (although you can imagine there could be a potential market to use your own toilet to service the cats instead of having to clean out the litter box on a regular interval). Pieter shows us what you can do with ARM (Azure Resource Manager) and how you can take repetitive work away by coding.

Pieter, a developer from origin coming from South Africa is English speaking but we can address him in Dutch as he has no problem understanding the Dutch language at all. Very useful for us (ok not for the English viewers – sorry …), asking the questions in Dutch and getting the answers in English.

Maybe there is something in this video you can use in your work or just watch this SDN Cast to develop yourself. Yeah, international readers probably don’t get it as most of it is in Dutch, but at least you have the news item links, I’m shure there is always something of use below.
