SDN Event: Ted Neward – Busy Architect’s Guide to DevOps

SDN EVent - Ted Neward I

As usual (by now) , we will put some of our SDN Event sessions online on YouTube for the next couple of Sundays.

The first session that we recorded last Friday was the session by Ted Neward, a popular presenter from the Seattle Area (USA). If you watch the presentation you’ll see why.

Go over there and watch Ted’s session if you missed the session at our event or if you’ve attended the session but want to see it again:

Where to go to see the recording:

Abstract:

"Developer Operations", or its more commonly-known nickname, DevOps, has taken the industry by storm. Everywhere you turn, everybody wants to be doing DevOps. It’s the new black, the new normal, the thing that everybody clearly represents the next pinnacle in software development…. Except not everybody agrees on what it is, how to do it, or what benefits it will even provide you. In this presentation, we’ll deconstruct the whole "DevOps" movement, talk about what it really represents, how to get started with it, and perhaps most importantly of all, talk about what is realistic to expect out of it once you have actually managed to "DevOps All The Things!" within your company.

Don’t forget to subscribe on our channel so you won’t miss the following sessions that we recorded:

SDN Cast 69 – Ignite, free Azure and Meetups!

image

Ignite was this week the major event for Microsoft, next to Build probably the biggest Microsoft event of the year. Lots of news around Office 365 (or should we say Microsoft 365 these days), Azure but as always lot to do around the Enterprise solutions such as SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, Skype for Business and so forth, and so forth …

A peculiar group walked up the stage this time. A group of Quantum Computing specialists sat on stage in a cozy setting having fun with all sorts of Quantum Computing jokes, but the audience was not very responsive to it. If you ask me (and if you read the reviews from the media we weren’t the only ones) a bit too heavy subject to discuss for a fairly ‘normal’ audience that attends Ignite. Absolutely a mind-blowing topic but you might wonder if Ignite is the right setting for this.

Satya Nadella released his book Hit Refresh Nadella to tell you all about how he became CEO for Microsoft and pressed the Refresh button, but also explained why he thought it was needed to do this. Satya gave his book to all of his Microsoft employees to read with a customized cover (Our Quest … instead of The Quest). Well worth the effort reading the book, especially to find out how his personal live influenced his many choices in the process.

The 69th edition of our Dutch weekly SDN Cast was partially on location this week, switching between Meetup location Nieuwegein and our home studios.

Our host Fanie was guest tonight at the 4DotNet Event:

Xamarin Event – September 28, Nieuwegein
https://events.4dotnet.nl/xamarin-event

He talked with Gerald Versluis who presented his session “Xamarin Mobile DevOps: setting up an automated pipeline for your apps” at the event and afterwards had a signing session to sign his new book Xamarin Continuous Integration and Delivery for the attendees of the event.

NgEurope, February 1-2, 2018 , Paris – France
https://ngeurope.org/

As usual we are always looking for presenters for our own events and Meetup’s so if you want to share something about hot technologies or just about something you implemented at work or in an App that could be interesting to our audience let us know so we can schedule you for one or our next SDN events or Dutch .NET Group Meetups.

This off course also goes for if you want to write a great article for us to publish in our SDN Magazines or at our SDN Website. The downside of publishing a magazine article is that there can be sometime between writing the article and publishing the magazine. So, if it is time critical sometimes the best option is to publish it on the www.sdn.nl website to get more speedy attention to the article.

As you see, options enough to address your audience with top notch information. You can even, if you like, be our guest in our SDN Cast shows to discuss the projects you are working on or other topics you master. We will instruct you how to connect with us and what it is you need to join the show.

Hopefully we will see you at our weekly web cast, for the schedule go to www.sdncast.nl for next week’s announcement to find out the day and time of our next broadcast or go to www.sdncast.nl/youtube to watch old episodes and videos that we recorded at our events. Don’t forget to subscribe our YouTube channel www.sdncast.nl/subscribe or go directly to YouTube not to miss any of our shows!

Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17004 for PC (Skip Ahead)

RS4 Windows 10 Insider Preview 17004.1000

Finally another build for Redstone 4, aka Windows 10 vNext, –following Fall Creators Update to be released in about two weeks from now- aka Skip Ahead, gets an update. For the first time the build number shifted from 16… to 17… something happening with each shift to a new version. The first Creators Update was numbered 15….

The blogpost mentions the watermark, bottom right, was removed, but my build contains the renewed “rs_prerelease” watermark:

image

Not much new in this release again, but there are some notable features if you look carefully. The Fluent UI slowly emerges into the UI, subtle lighting in the start menu can be noticed:

RS4 Start Menu

For the most part there are the issues fixed for Redstone 3, Fall Creators Update, that will be incorporated from the other flight into the Redstone 4 flight. So don’t expect too much from the update … yet.

Hit Refresh arrived on my Kindle today – Update

Hit Refresh Released

In my previous post around Hit Refresh, Satya Nadella’s just released book:

I mentioned:
BTW, it appears all Microsoft employees received a signed copy … maybe we can get him to sign a couple of them at the next MVP Summit!

Well apparently I was a bit early with preordering so now I already bought and received the book even though I was offered a complimentary copy of the book yesterday as well. So I lost my money on the book? Hell no, Satya is donating all of his proceeds from Hit Refresh to Microsoft Philanthropies.

I still would like to see the option to get Satya to sign a hardcopy for us at the next MVP Summit though … and given that it’s for a good cause I’d even buy the hardcopy to sign as well 🙂

Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 16299 for PC

RS3 Windows 10 Insider Preview 16299

It’s been a couple of days ago already since the previous Preview Build came around. But today, while the complete Insiders Team is at #msignite they announced the release of Windows 10 Insiders Preview Build 16299:

https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2017/09/26/announcing-windows-10-insider-preview-build-16299-pc

Only on the Fast Ring of Redstone 3 (Fall Creators Update) and not on Skip Ahead (Redstone 4).

Just some bug fixes, the list is getting shorter and shorter ….

Hit Refresh arrived on my Kindle today

Hit Refresh Released

A while ago I preordered Hit Refresh on Amazon:

It’s the book by the ‘new’ Microsoft CEO. I’m interested to read it and see how it compares to the books by Bill Gates. My guess is that it is a complete different type of book, but we’ll see. I downloaded it on my (Android) phone so I can dive in whenever I have a minute to spare Smile.

BTW, it appears all Microsoft employees received a signed copy … maybe we can get him to sign a couple of them at the next MVP Summit!

SDN Cast 68 – DotNETConf en Google leaks

SDNCast 68-800

Conference season obviously started and the big three (Microsoft, Google and Apple) pop out events shortly after each other anxiously trying to be the first to come with new hardware announcements. Apple last week presented their new iPhones, at the end of October it is expected that Microsoft will come forward with -their- hardware announcements (although there is also the rumor that there will be another event in the middle of the month) and Google is planned for October 4th.

This week unexpected information was published about the hardware Google most likely planned to show at their October 4th event and probably not-amused to see all their scoops in a web post from one of the tech journalists. The new Pixel 2 devices, the new Google Pixelbook, a smaller smart speaker Google Home Mini and the new edition of their Daydream View VR headset.

Another one on the long list of upcoming events was DotNETConf online this week where Microsoft gave us an update on their development tools. An overview of what is going on with Visual Studio, Xamarin and Visual Studio Code, their light weight editor. Also updates on their languages and what is going on in the cloud with Azure.

We discussed it all in our weekly Dutch SDN Cast together with the news of the week, the rumors of tomorrow and the events on schedule. If you master the Dutch language go on over and watch the Dutch episode (on a weekly base so don’t forget to subscribe!) and in an hour you are completely up to date!

Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 16296 for PC

RS3 Windows 10 Insider Preview 16296

Darn …. these Windows Insiders Program dudes go faster than light!

I just blogged about the 16294 build that I personally missed. Posted the blog, checked the Windows Insiders Program and guess what? Another build!

Yes …. you heard it right … another build …

Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 16296 for PC

Fast ring only, Redstone 3 … not the Skip Ahead, Redstone 4.

The important notice still stands from the previous (16294) build:

IMPORTANT NOTE: You will be unable to install *new*/additional language packs on this build. Pre-existing language packs (language packs you’ve installed previously) will carry over and work just fine.

So let’s see if there is another build while I’m publishing this blog update Smile

Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 16294 for PC

RS3 Windows 10 Insider Preview 16294

Just a quick update .. I personally missed it because I’m on the Skip Ahead flight and this one is only available on the Fast Ring, not the Slow Ring or the Skip Ahead Ring:

https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2017/09/20/announcing-windows-10-insider-preview-build-16294-pc

For us … the Dutch people, it was an important build though because they fixed an issue specifically with Dutch builds:

“We fixed an issue on Dutch builds where explorer could go into a crash loop if an app-requested downloads notification popped up from OneDrive.”

Still not much more … only a couple of bug fixes. There is however an IMPORTANT NOTE added at September 21st:

“You will be unable to install *new*/additional language packs on this build. Pre-existing language packs (language packs you’ve installed previously) will carry over and work just fine.”

We are getting closer and closer to the final release. Hardly a prediction anymore.

I haven’t heard anything about it, but would Ignite be an opportunity for release? Sadly, I won’t be there to watch it live … but the keynote is streamed live so I’ll be at the monitor Monday afternoon.

Breaking: React Relicensed MIT

React License

Last few weeks there was a lot of fuzz going around React and other frameworks. The reason? Facebook changed their licensing on a couple of frameworks, React was one, to BSD + Patents License making it hard for many companies to use the very popular frameworks because they conflicted with their policies as there was a potential risk when there emerged a legal issue with Facebook.

Facebook tried to explain their point of view in a FAQ:
https://code.facebook.com/pages/850928938376556

It didn’t help … the fuzz continued to grow bigger and bigger and support for React dropped like a dead fly.

So today there emerged this new blogpost:

Relicensing React, Jest, Flow, and Immutable.js

In short, they are going back to the MIT license, apologized for the loss of time searching for alternative frameworks and back to business.

So that was that … you may however wonder if the companies touched by the issue are open to return to the framework that might change their licenses in the future again.

It certainly showed the risk on using third party software, even if it was licensed in a very flexible license plan. Apparently licenses can be changed anytime (?) I’m not a lawyer but I wonder if it is even legal to switch licenses back and forth. What is the use of a license if you keep switching it?
