How to record your user group presentations in high quality with low budget tooling – Part II

In my previous post about session recording I explained how we recorded straight to Google Hangouts. This time there is a slight change of plans … we replaced Google Hangouts by YouTube Live through OBS Studio. Also we no longer require the presenter to login to Google Hangouts. Instead we now use the Elgato HD60S HDMI Splitter/Game Capture Device to capture the presenters screen so there won’t be any lag caused by Google Hangouts while presenting. Google Hangouts could negatively impact the performance of the presenters’ PC because the video processing can be a heavy impact if the PC or laptop does not have a fast video card inside.

New Recording gear setup with OBS Studio:

clip_image002

By using OBS Studio (or other production/broadcasting/recording software such as vMix that I use in our weekly SDN Cast recordings) we can simultaneously record our session to local disk and as an option broadcasting it to YouTube Live. The recording PC in this case is connected to the YouTube Live stream, the presenter is just sending his desktop images to the beamer over the Elgato HD60S Game Capture device.

My gear list as used so far with the configuration in the picture above:

  • One recording laptop
    OBS Studio
  • One monitor laptop (optional)
  • Behringer XENIX QX1002USB
    Power Supply
6.35 mm Jack to 3.5 mm headphone adapter
    USB Cable
  • AKG WMS45 Band D Wireless Microphone Set
    Power Supply
    Wireless Microphone
    XLR Cable Male/Female
  • Logitech 930e HD Web Cam
    USB Extension Cable (Optional)
  • Camera Stand/tripod
  • Elgato HD60S
  • USB Hub (Optional, if your laptop does not have enough ports)
  • Headphones
  • One presenter laptop to share his desktop

Installing the recording gear:

Put the camera in front of the presenter covering both the projector screen and the presenters desk. Be careful not to put the camera too much into the viewing field of the audience. The optional USB extension cord can help here.

The camera is small, so not really an issue as it seems. This camera will be the ‘overview’ camera setup showing both the presenter walking around, sitting down at his desk as well as the big screen from the beamer.

The wireless microphone is pinned on the presenter for near field voice recording, don’t hurt him by clipping it on his skin. This microphone will record his story telling voice, picked up by the AKG WMS45 wireless receiver set and dropped into the Behringer XENIX QX1002USB.

The Behringer will provide the sound USB input channel for the recording ‘source one’ combined with the video from the camera ‘overview’ output by the Logitech 930.

The recording PC will be logged in as video producer to YouTube Live (optional) and you will be able to switch between sources, big screen and presenter or desktop view using OBS Studio.

An example of a session recording (this recording is in English BTW):

”Fanie Reynders – Rest-ful APIs with ASP.NET Core”
https://youtu.be/rsgwUsfD2-A

A full playlist of all our (Dutch and English ) recorded sessions so far can be found here if you want to see more:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLC5P51a_60YElMJvidAy7GagDJH0Y-UwX

What you see in this example video is that we can switch between the big picture on the overhead screen and jump into detail by showing the desktop from the presenter laptop to get a good readable picture of the slides or even when there is live coding going on.

With OBS Studio you can setup multiple screens consisting of several inputs, images, cameras or videos to create a compelling view. You can even add some sponsor information in the screens. While directing your recording you can switch between the screens that you prepared with all the sources.

So, is all good now, doing it this way with the improved inputs sharing the HDMI signal on the Elgato HD60S?

Well, we lost the issue that the presenter experienced some delays on his PC due to the video processing. No need to log in as presenter, no need to have a Google Account available to do so. It is closer (for the presenter, at least) to the zero-configuration solution.

With the setup above you can broadcast your sessions through YouTube Live and record on your local hard drive to share after the event. If you are afraid to broadcast live and for example think about the risk of getting a lower number of attendees (why going to the event, it is broadcasted live) the session can be just recorded without going into YouTube Live and you can decide to upload the video only after the event is over (this also gives you the option to edit the footage, adding annotations, start or end screens and upload the edited footage for you to share as public video).

I really hope this post will encourage you to try the same thing what we did and get more of the community efforts recorded and to get more of our valuable arranged sessions shared to a larger audience. The information is way too valuable not to share!

If you want to comment on this setup, share improvements, have questions or just want to say something, leave your comments below on this post!

SDN Cast 53 – ARM, CShell, WWDC and news week 23

SDNCast 53-800

Developments are going fast, according to the rumors from the market that is. There already was the pre-recorded video at Build 2017 about Windows on ARM, this weeks announcement by Qualcomm on full Windows 10 PCs running on its Snapdragon 835 ARM processor with built-in LTE for “Always Connected” devices (https://www.qualcomm.com/news/onq/2017/05/31/windows-10-running-snapdragon-835-mobile-pc-platform-unveiled-computex).

Intel quickly followed with a statement suggesting that certain 3rd parties might have been using their patents without their consent.

At the same time videos appeared online showing the new Windows interface called CShell. CShell has options to scale the user interface depending on the device the applications are running on. A smaller device will adapt to a mobile like interface where on full scale systems all details will emerge. All devices will get their most optimized view.

Overall it seems that a new Windows mobile devices is rising but not with Windows Mobile but with the full version of Windows that will also be running on full PC ARM devices as mentioned above. Devices have been announced, in the official prerecorded video by Microsoft and also in other videos to be arriving Q4 this year already! In other words, ready for Holiday Season 2017…

Besides speculating on this, we also discussed the news items presented at the Apple Developer Conference WWDC 2017. We are talking about the new devices, upgrades to the iMac Pro, HomePod, AIKit APIs and more. So our Dutch speaking viewers get updated in about an hour on the latest news and event updates.

If you are in the neighborhood also don’t forget that our next SDN Event is close. At June 23rd we will have our second SDN Event this year with, as always, a great set of sessions and speakers. A slightly changed program this time, we will start with a generic keynote by Richard Campbell. After that the regular sessions start.

SDN Cast 52, live from Madrid, news for week 22

In this week’s SDN Cast (week 22) we connected live to Madrid – Spain, where I attended the MVP Community Event. Between sessions and eating at a restaurant in the Real Madrid Stadium I quickly escaped the group for a moment to give you our weekly report and to sit with Marcel Meijer and Fanie Reynders to present you with the latest news and upcoming events. A show with a sunny Spanish touch.

One of the interesting events for this week is the Computex 2017 event where Microsoft not only announced new products but also presented their vision on “Always Connected Devices”.

The “Always Connected” topic wasn’t their first time, Bill Gates mentioned that years earlier, but this time in a way where devices have integrated their SIMs, so called eSIMs. These are provider independent chips/SIMs installed in your machine and enables you to connect to one or more supported mobile providers. There won’t be a vendor lock with this and allows you to switch providers as you like.

With this you will turn all your devices into phone. This means that your small tablet form factor can act like a phone, but also with larger devices you can turn your device in a phone (note: not like Skype is doing using the internet, but using the 4G/LTE services from your mobile provider).

It’s an interesting development and we might see in this what Microsoft has in mind for mobile phones. Up to now we were kept into the dark on any plans or roadmap for Windows Mobile.

How to record your user group presentations in high quality with low budget tooling

Every three months we at SDN manage to pull off SDN Events, full day four track, five sessions a track with great Dutch and some occasional international speakers showing off their great content to our attendees.

Last year we started to record some of these sessions, first ones to try out as proof of concept, but now in production already to share our content to a bigger audience.

I was asked more than once how we were able to record our SDN Event session recordings in relatively high quality with only some low budget tools. So here it is so far.

Recording gear setup:

SDN Event Recording - 2 Hangout Connections

This has been our setup up as we used it until today, but for the next event we will try something else for the reasons you will read at the end of this blog post. I guess we will continue to tinker with the setup until it is just perfect. This change will be the subject of another blog post, but only if all of this tinkering actually appeared to work for us. No need to bore you with something that does not work properly.

Right now we use two Google Hangout logins per recording, one from the ‘recording device’ (actually the device is not recording, Google Hangouts/YouTube is doing the recording for us) and one login from the laptop used by the presenter.

The ‘recording device’ is logged into Google Hangouts with the recorded projector screen and presenter and presenter voice using the Logitech webcam and wifi microphone set. The presenter logs into Google hangouts with his own laptop, sharing the desktop, providing a high quality representation of what is shown on the projector screen.

My gear list as used up to today with the configuration in the picture:

    • One recording laptop and a Google ID
    • Behringer XENIX QX1002USB
    • AKG WMS45 Band D Wireless Microphone Set
    • Logitech 930e HD Web Cam
    • One presenter laptop to share his desktop

Installing the recording gear:

Put the camera in front of the presenter covering both the projector screen and the presenters desk. Be careful not to put the camera too much into the viewing field of the audience.

The camera is fairly small, so not really an issue as it seems. This camera will be the ‘overview’ camera setup showing both the presenter walking around, sitting down at his desk and the big screen.

The wireless microphone is pinned on the presenter for near field voice recording, don’t hurt him by clipping it on his skin. This microphone will record his story telling voice, picked up with the AKG WMS45 wireless receiver set and dropped into the Behringer XENIX QX1002USB. The Behringer will provide the sound USB input channel for Google Hangout ‘source one’ combined with the camera ‘overview’ output by the Logitech 930.

The presenter is also logged in to Google Hangouts as ‘second source’. This will be full time sharing his desktop.

The main recording device will be logged in as video producer and you will be able to switch between sources, big screen and presenter or desktop view.

An example of a session recording (this recording is in English b.t.w.) :
”Mr. Moffat – Introducing Microsoft Power BI”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_bQ_EivYb4

A full playlist of all our (Dutch and English ) recorded sessions so far can be found here if you want to see more:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLC5P51a_60YElMJvidAy7GagDJH0Y-UwX

What you see in this example is that we are able to switch between the big picture on the overhead screen and jump into detail by showing the desktop from the presenter laptop to get a good readable picture of the slides or even when there is live coding going on.

So is all good, doing it this way?

No, we are still learning and we found some downsides with this configuration (maybe more, but this is the main one) and that is that you require the presenter to log into Google Hangouts and therefor he needs a Google ID. This means that this is not a zero configuration solution to the speaker invited to do his session.

It seemed not everyone owns a Google ID. Also, it can be somewhat cumbersome to the presenter to log into Google Hangouts, disable his camera and recording microphone (check this ahead of time before the recording starts, as this will cause a critical echo caused by getting two sources at once, one over the wireless mic the other through the presenter laptop mic. So the last one has to be disabled. Also there is a small amount of his resources used to run the Hangout in the background. This could affect the responsiveness a little bit and maybe interfere a bit on high resource claiming presentations (for instance if he needs to compile a bit of code in the demos).

With the setup above you are able to live broadcast your sessions and immediately record it as is to share after the event. If you are afraid to broadcast live risking a lower number of attendees (why going to the event, it is broadcasted live) you can record the session private or unlisted and expose the video only when the event is over (this also gives you the option to record the session, download the video and edit the footage adding annotations, start or end screens and upload the edited footage to share as public video).

To get around the issues mentioned above we will test a slightly changed configuration by adding en extra device. But as said, I will explain this later on, when tested and with proof of recording properly.

I really hope this post will encourage you to try the same thing what we did and get more of the community efforts recorded and to get more of our valuable arranged sessions shared to a bigger audience. The information is way too valuable not to share!

If you want to comment on this setup, share improvements, have questions or just want to say something, leave your comments below on this post!

Week 6 SDN Cast News on Windows Developer Day and more

SDNCast 39

This week was the week of the Windows Developer Day – Creators Update, an online event by Microsoft where they shared that he upcoming version of Windows also called the Creators Update is now feature complete. So also the SDK for this Windows version became available for download. And that was not all, there was more. Open sourcing of about twenty UWP controls developed by Telerik are now available for free.

Project Rome, to control applications on other devices, will now get an Android version soon. Bugs and Features are now in the open and published through a special site providing you with some insights on what is about to come, but also how bugs are progressing. Top UserVoice items will also arrive in the list so you can check for yourself to see how this is evolving.

We looked at migrating .json projects to .csproj. Fanie created a Proof of Concept to transform a .json configuration file into a .csproj equivalent and shows us how to get started in a demo.

Also we added some more interviews (Dutch) that we recorded at the by our friends from dotNed organized dotNedSaturday and also created a dedicated playlist for the dotNedSaturday videos. We are not completely finished yet with editing the interviews so there will be some more the upcoming week. The ones we posted so far can be watched here:

Week 3 SDN Cast news with Brady Gaster from Microsoft

SDNCast 36

SDN Cast 36 is, to break a pattern, completely hosted in English. Not for no reason, but because we asked Brady Gaster to join us this week on our web cast. And, as we learned from our parents excluding someone from the discussion is ill-mannered by talking in a different language without translation we did not want to do the show half Dutch, half English and went for the English all the way option.

Already said it, we had a special guest this week, Brady Gaster in a live connection with Microsoft Campus in Redmond. Brady is working on some great tooling such as Downr, Azure Tools for Visual Studio Code, also DMC – docs.Microsoft.com is part of he daily playground, so we asked him to tell us all about it and even better to join us at one of our upcoming SDN Events.

Obviously we started with some news and events but the interesting part of this show is the part where Brady explained in a waterfall of information what they built (and deployed). We collected all the links from his presentation and added them to the list of links below.

Take some time to look at his presentation and see where you can use it in your daily job to be more productive, and think of it as a teaser or introduction of what you will see at our upcoming SDN Events later on this year!

Week 50 – SDN Cast 32: VS 2017 RC Update, Cortana

image

Last week we had our ‘quarterly’ SDN Event with as ‘special’ a couple of speakers from Canada and Italy! For the Delphi Track we invited Marco Cantù, Delphi Product Manager with Embarcadero, and Andrea Magni – Embarcadero MVP Delphi, both from Italy. Marco and Andrea completely filled the Delphi track for the full day. We also flew in Dick Moffat from Canada to enlighten us on the developments on Power BI. Dick Moffat also joined us as a guest live in our 31st SDN Cast at my house. Obviously all other speakers at the SDN Event provided us with their high quality sessions and by now their session slides are available at our SDN website: : https://www.sdn.nl/EVENTS/9-december-2016. We also did broadcast the Power BI/Excel sessions live through our SDN Cast site: www.sdncast.nl so if you missed it your can go back and watch our recordings for these sessions. For next year we already planned the dates for the first three SDN Events, look at the events list below and add them to your schedule.

As promised we also picked the three winners for the Resharper licenses among the registered attendees and the winners are:

· Adriaan van Lent
· Rene Tielemans en
· Ton Soont

These guys will get the licenses mailed on their registration address, congratulations! We also want to thank JetBrains for their contribution at our event!

SDN Cast 29 Week 47 News and Events – Happy Holidays, Black Friday and Cyber Monday

sdncast-29_110_110

Traditionally from a US point of view one of the main sources for news and information on Software Development is shutting down. It is the week in the United States where everybody is moving home to celebrate their annual day of Thanksgiving to eat turkey and much more than that. No one is releasing any news in this week or even the week after (we did find a few exceptions as you can see in the news overview below). The day after Thanksgiving retail stores start their big day of sales called Black Friday, who hasn’t seen the videos where large groups of people all run into the stores falling over each other and steal products from other customers baskets? Following Black Friday there is Cyber Monday, originally meant to do the same as Black Friday but now for online retail stores. Both days did merge a bit and we see a whole week of online offers on great discounts. What did you buy today?

Even though it’s quiet this week we did find some interesting news items and discussed it at our SDN Cast this week. The number of events is dropping around this time, Connect(); by Microsoft was about the one big closing event. The videos are currently available on Channel9 if you want to watch them.

Software News and Events for Week 36 – Windows Wedding Day?

SDN Cast

A day early, today we recorded our Dutch SDN Cast live from our own home locations. Last week we recorded our SDN Cast on location at venue Hotel Oud London in Zeist to introduce our quarterly SDN Event. As usual we discussed the news and events for this week and tried to hook into the Apple Event while we were casting our show.

Just before going live I updated my broadcasting PC to Microsoft Anniversary and due to having a Dutch system I was redirected to an information page explaining I was eligible to install “Microsoft Wedding day” and my machine was ready to install “Microsoft Birthday” edition. An example of how machine translations messed up … The upside is that it was fun to read providing a good laugh. I won’t laugh too loud though as I probably make similar mistakes translating Dutch to English resulting in Denglisch J. Obviously it is not easy to translate Anniversary into the Dutch equivalent.

For my Dutch readers, here is the info provided:

Apple Event

This week we have tough competition with our SDN Cast. At the same time of our Cast there was the Apple Event announcing a new Apple Watch, the iPhone 7, wireless earbuds. Every now and then we picked up some pricing or news items from the Apple show. We are not forgetting that a large part of Software Development is targeting Apple devices so it has our attention!

September 2nd we had our latest SDN Event in Zeist, with all kind of topics software development related with great speakers. For a full list of our events schedule take a look at:

http://www.sdn.nl/EVENTS/2-september-2016

There is a list with all the abstracts giving you an impression of what it was all about.

We recorded a couple of our sessions (again, we are in the learning process to get our sessions recorded so we started by recording just a few to ‘test drive’)

Recordings:

Build Intelligent Bots with IoT on Azure by Fanie Reynders
https://youtu.be/WmxOSXqC7S4

[Dutch Recording] Continuous Delivery and DevOps – The Microsoft Way by Hassan Fadili
https://youtu.be/0x5c4o5ywWk

HoloLens

Roy Janssen offered to show us the HoloLens to all the attendees at the SDN Event on top of an introduction session in the first session slots to give an impression what you can do with it and how to work with a HoloLens to create your own applications. Over the day everyone had the chance to try the HoloLens and personally experience what it feels like. His company can be found at his website http://semper-IT.nl.
