SDN Cast 29 Week 47 News and Events – Happy Holidays, Black Friday and Cyber Monday

sdncast-29_110_110

Traditionally from a US point of view one of the main sources for news and information on Software Development is shutting down. It is the week in the United States where everybody is moving home to celebrate their annual day of Thanksgiving to eat turkey and much more than that. No one is releasing any news in this week or even the week after (we did find a few exceptions as you can see in the news overview below). The day after Thanksgiving retail stores start their big day of sales called Black Friday, who hasn’t seen the videos where large groups of people all run into the stores falling over each other and steal products from other customers baskets? Following Black Friday there is Cyber Monday, originally meant to do the same as Black Friday but now for online retail stores. Both days did merge a bit and we see a whole week of online offers on great discounts. What did you buy today?

Even though it’s quiet this week we did find some interesting news items and discussed it at our SDN Cast this week. The number of events is dropping around this time, Connect(); by Microsoft was about the one big closing event. The videos are currently available on Channel9 if you want to watch them.

Where can you find the 29th edition of our Dutch SDN Cast?

Software News and Events for Week 40/41- .NET, Dynamics and HoloLens

SDNCast 24

Last week Microsoft was in the Amsterdam RAI with their TechDays 2016. A two-day conference with lots of great sessions to learn a thing or two. Marcel Meijer, Fanie Reynders and I were there as well in the Experts Lounge to answer some questions from the community and to look at some sessions ourselves and learn. While we were around anyway, we decided that it would be a good idea to take some interviews with some of the speakers and record scenes from the venue just for entertainment purposes. You can go to http://www.sdncast.nl to watch the results of it. Keep in mind that as our audience is Dutch the recordings are also Dutch for the large part.

As we skipped the week of news and events, we covered this week the news and events for two weeks. Fanie couldn’t make it this week and he is also very busy preparing his sessions for next week at our Dutch .NET Meetup.

Software News and Events for Week 39 – WPF/XAML UI in PowerShell

SDNCast 21

It’s the Last week of September already and our twenty first SDN Cast week filled with announcements with one of the largest IT Pro events going on this week… Ignite! Just too many announcements to sum up but we will try to get some highlights here. Next to the announcements and events we also bring you two demos this week: Building a stub framework with .NET Core and providing great WPF/XAML User Interfaces within this ‘boring’ PowerShell environment. Did you know you can actually build graphical user interfaces while scripting your stuff in PowerShell?

Demo time

Fanie Reynders created an easy to use stub framework to use within your .NET Core projects to quickly test your application with some dummy information. The tool is available via Nuget and called Stubbr. Following the .NET Core demo Maarten showed us what most of us can’t imagine and that is building PowerShell scripts with an actual graphic designed User Interface implementing WPF/XAML. What you’ll see is that by extending the PowerShell script with additional XAML coding you can start building your own, nothing is too crazy, windows to interact with the end user but keep the power of scripting using PowerShell.

We hope you like watching our Dutch SDN Casts to catch up in a bit more than an hour on the topics that are hot for this week and hear the latest news and see the great demo’s on technology and software development that you can apply in your real world scenarios.

Demo time

Fanie Reynders this week demo’ed JWT. This is short for JSON Web Tokens, an open industry standard RFC 7519 method for representing claims securely between two parties. It shows us how to handle the exchange of tokens in a .NET Core application. A complex subject that for most people is hard to get but by going into the details we presented a complete running example explaining how to use tokens for authentication using JWT technologies.

We hope you like watching our Dutch SDN Casts to catch up in a bit more than an hour on the topics that are hot for this week and hear the latest news and see the great demo’s on technology and software development that you can apply in your real world scenarios.

Demo time

Fanie Reynders this week demo’ed Azure Portal, showing many new options in Azure Portal. Maarten van Stam was updating .NET Core (www.dot.net) 1.0.1 live on the show and shows the new trend, developing JavaScript Desktop applications using Electron (http://electron.atom.io). It’s cross platform to build Desktop Applications. Many large applications already have been in the open already and a good example for that is Microsoft Visual Studio Code. This runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. In the meantime, Marcel Meijer surprised us with a WordPerfect demo. The underwater screen is back from where it came from. So watch the show for a great impression, but you need to speak Dutch ;-).

We hope you like watching our Dutch SDN Casts to catch up in a bit more than an hour on the topics that are hot for this week and hear the latest news and see the great demo’s on technology and software development that you can apply in your real world scenarios.

Don’t forget to subscribe our channel as with enough subscribers we get the option to create an easier to remember link instead of the complex URL we are forced in today for our channel! And if you haven’t heard, the 100th subscriber will get something in return!

Software News and Events for Week 36 – Windows Wedding Day?

SDN Cast

A day early, today we recorded our Dutch SDN Cast live from our own home locations. Last week we recorded our SDN Cast on location at venue Hotel Oud London in Zeist to introduce our quarterly SDN Event. As usual we discussed the news and events for this week and tried to hook into the Apple Event while we were casting our show.

Just before going live I updated my broadcasting PC to Microsoft Anniversary and due to having a Dutch system I was redirected to an information page explaining I was eligible to install “Microsoft Wedding day” and my machine was ready to install “Microsoft Birthday” edition. An example of how machine translations messed up … The upside is that it was fun to read providing a good laugh. I won’t laugh too loud though as I probably make similar mistakes translating Dutch to English resulting in Denglisch J. Obviously it is not easy to translate Anniversary into the Dutch equivalent.

For my Dutch readers, here is the info provided:

It is our first on venue recording so we had no clue to what to bring and how to get this to work. I’ll promise, next recordings will slowly get better once we know how to get our gear functioning properly J.

Showtime: Paranormal Activity, The Marked Ones

Paranormal Activity The Marked Ones

The “Showtime” section on my blog is a reminder, mostly for my own reference but maybe helpful for other film enthusiasts as well, to remember what movies I’ve seen lately, what it was about and how I rated it in general.

Paranormal Activity, The Marked Ones is not part of the other Paranormal Activity series (Paranormal Activity 1,2,3,4 and 5 on its way to arrive this year) although it does include some hidden footage from Paranormal Activity 3 but is a so called spinoff.

The story is about high school graduate Jesse and he is experiencing weird things after his neighbor was found dead. He is curious to see what happened there and investigates the abandoned home of his neighbor. Not long after that he appears to be marked for possession and affecting the people around him.

The movie feels a bit low budget (the actual budget was $5,000,000 so what is low) and to me was not that thrilling. As with the other Paranormal Activity movies this one was also captured as if it was recorded using a home video camera (as seen in the The Blair Witch Project) and gives you a messy interpretation of what is happening. Overall not the best horror movie available and I wouldn’t recommend spending your money on going to the cinemas. Instead wait for the TV, DVD or VOD and watch it at home with a bag of chips and get on with your life. Four out of Ten I’d say …

Last call for SDN Magazine Copy

SDN Magazine

If you would like to see your article in print, this is your chance. We are about to close the gate and getting ready to assemble the next SDN Magazine so if you have some copy to print on your desk still hot enough to put in print in the magazine contact @MarcelMeijer or @aafvstam (me) to get your article in.

Obviously when you miss the deadline, we are always looking for new articles, we just shift ‘em to the next one if you are too late :-).

The SDN Magazine is mostly Dutch but if you want to provide an English article that is OK too, as long as the article is Software Development related we are happy to serve that to our readers.

Showtime: The Wolf of Wall Street

Wolf of Wall Street

The Wolf of Wall Street is this crazy movie based on the true story of Jordan Belfort (Leonardo diCaprio) working his way up on Wall Street from nothing to a successful stockbroker. It completely gets out of hand and turns into a world full of drugs, corruption, crimes and fighting the federal system.

The movie starts where Jordan starts to make big money and building his little empire of stockbrokers and at a point making millions in just minutes. Not knowing what to do with all the money he and his buddies try to think of all sorts of crazy things to do just to get rid of the money as it comes in faster than they can spend.

To be honest, the registration of all of this crazy stuff tends to be a bit boring after some time. You get used to all the crazy things, naked people running around, parties and other weird stuff and start waiting to get to the second part of the movie where Jordan actually gets into trouble with the federal government as some of the ways to earn more money wasn’t exactly done how it should be done.

The story was mostly told by Jordan and you are experiencing the things he is doing from within his head hearing his thoughts (somewhat like Stranger than Fiction, did you get to see that one?). One of the nice aspects in the movie is showing the differences between what Jordan thinks and what is compared to what happened in ‘the real -sober- world’. Martin Scorsese did a great job making this a movie with a lot of extravaganza in the world of excessive stockbrokers. Not a thrill but a joy to watch and spend a couple of hours in another space. I rate the movie Eight out of Ten, but maybe just a bit jealous seeing all that money :-).
